Not My President Day Protests
Coverage collected from socials for the 50501 “no kings” day
It’s George Washington’s Birthday and around the US (and CANADA too) a majority of Americans are coming out for NOT MY PRESIDENT day.
You might be aware that Trump and his cronies have decided to cancel a lot of holidays, and even convinced Google (for shame!) to remove Black History Month and Martin Luther King Day from the google calendar. Well, today, many in the US decided to cancel him right back. First of all, hats off to the news platforms that have covered the massive protests as they unfolded across the country — and for shame on any that decided it wasn’t important enough (bet you know who they are). In this installment of Brandy-is-mad-at-media, I have collected things as they hit Bluesky — increasingly one of the last social media platforms that hasn’t bent the knee.
It’s being called the 50501 protest, “50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement” against “the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration.” This marks the second nationwide protest by the group. NPR carried a story the day before with the call to action: “The current administration has clarified that it cares more about profit than people. We as a collective refuse to stand by as they continue to undermine the dignity of our communities,” […] “We are not just numbers or consumers. We are the People. We reject fascism. We reject the oligarchy. We reject the idea that any person’s worth is less than another’s.”
The Associated Press released a statement about the Boston protest, and CBS had video of the one in Oakland and USA today mentions Virginia and other areas. But to understand the sheer volume, reach, and strength of these protests, you need to go to local affiliates: Houston Chronicle: ‘No one voted for Musk’: Hundreds join Presidents Day protest at Houston City Hall; Fox 11 Los Angeles: ‘Not My President’s Day’ protests to be held in LA, nationwide; Billings Gazete: “Not My President” protest at Billings City Hall; WLNS Lansing MI: ‘Not My President’ rally held at Michigan Capitol ; Cincinnati Inquirer: Lincoln Heights residents protest Evendale police response to Nazi protest as well as groups like DEMOCRACY NOW: Not My President’s Day: Protests Against Trump to Be Held Today in 50 States and independent journalists on their respective news blogs and social media.
To capture some of the images and the scale, below are public posts from Bluesky from around the country. This is not an exhaustive list, but a sample. So when you turn on CNN and see nothing, you will not be mislead into thinking nothing is happening.
